The main goals of the AFHA are as follows:

1. Advance the basic human rights of all women, men and youth to make free and informed choices regarding their own sexual and reproductive health, and advocate for the means to exercise these rights, providing leadership in Reproductive Health and Responsible Parenthood.

2. Respond to the increased unmet need for fertility regulation, eliminating unsafe abortion, STI/HIV/AIDS prevention and care, safe motherhood and empowerment of women, addressing in particular the needs of marginal and disadvantaged groups within society, and working in partnership with governmental and non-governmental parties, international agencies and private organizations.

3. Through the efforts of a capable and committed body of volunteers and staff contribute to the institutional capacity building of the Organization, sustain a secure, diversified funding base and maintain accountability in all aspects of its work.

The Outcome Objectives

The outcome objective is significant improvement of the sexual and reproductive health of the target population in the interest of family welfare, community well-being and population sustainable development.

Summary of Main Activities

1995-1996 - Conducting the Survey on “Sexual Health of Adolescents and Young People in the city of Yerevan and Kotayk region” (in partnership with MOH, with support of UNFPA).

1996-1997 - Implementation of a project on “Raising awareness of teenagers, parents and teachers on issues related to Sexual Health of Adolescents” in 36 public schools in the city of Yerevan and Kotayk region (with support of SC/USAID).

1997-2003 (on going) - Initiation and establishment of the informal coalition of 7 local NGOs “Armenian Consortium on Family Health and Welfare” and promotion of collaboration.

1997-1998 - Conducting the “Nationwide Reproductive Health survey among Armenian Men and Women and publishing its results (in partnership with the Republican Center on Perinatology, Obstetrics and Gynecology, with support of UMCOR)

1997-1998 - Implementation of project on “Needs Assessment, Provision of Information, Education, and Medical Services on FP/RH for Refugee Communities in Yerevan” (in collaboration with 3 other NGOs – members of the Armenian Consortium on Family Health and Welfare, and the Ministry of Health of Armenia, with support of  UNHCR).

1997-2002 - Rehabilitation of the facilities of the Policlinic of the Republican Hospital for Children, establishment and strengthening capacity of the Sexual Health Center for Adolescents  (with support of Save the Children/USAID/UNICEF).

1999-2000 - Implementation of the “Healthy Teenager” pilot project on sex education, targeting 6 public schools in Yerevan and regions (in partnership with the Ministry of Education and Science, with support of IPPF/NTF).

1999-2003 (on-going) - Raising Public Awareness on prevention of abortions, STIs/HIV/AIDS, and provision of Information, Education, Counselling, Referral and Primary Health Care services (with support of IPPF-EN).

1999-2003 (on-going) - Strengthening Institutional Capacity of the Armenian “For Family and Health” Association (with support of IPPF-EN, NGO Training and Resource Center /Armenian Assembly of America/ USAID).

2001 - Implementation of the joint project with  FPAs involved in the IPPF-EN “Sexuality Education for All of Us: IPPF’s experience in Eastern Europe” (in partnership with the Ministry of Education and Science, with support of IPPF/NTF).

2001 - Establishment of the “Vernissage” Youth Center in Yerevan and promotion of its activities (with support of IPPF-EN).

2001 - Establishment of the Publishing Network “Artavazd” and strengthening its activities.

2001 - Organization of the Youth Forum and competition for best posters on HIV/AIDS in Yerevan, and publishing the Album “Armenian Children Speak Out on AIDS”  within the framework of the world-wide campaign “Say Yes for Children” (with support of IPPF-EN and UNICEF).

2001 - Conducting the project on Personal and Social Development of preschool children through public demonstration of the video film “Our Child is Growing” and provision of counseling to parents and care givers (with support of UNICEF).

2001-2003 (on going) - Conducting the project on “Improvement of Sexual and Reproductive Health of Women, Men and Young People” (in partnership with the Ministry of Health of Armenia, Yerevan State Medical University, and Centre on Perinathology, Obstetrics and Gynaecology, with support of UNFPA).

2002-2003 - Conducting the advocacy project on Sexual and Reproductive Rights and Health of young people “Towards Healthy Generation and Survival of Nation” (in partnership with 5 other NGOs, members of the Consortium on Family Health and Welfare, with support of World Learning/USAID).

2003-2005 - Conducting the project on “Improvement of Quality of Care” provided in 8 Service Delivery Points in Yerevan, Ararat, Armavir, Gegharkunik and Kotayk regions (with support of IPPF-EN).
